I would never smoke around a non-smoker when he/she was eating. Hell, I didn't like to smoke when I was eating, although I knew people who did. I also always went out of my way not to blow smoke in the direction of non-smokers. With reasonable people, this generally worked. The problem is, the first casualties of the banning mindset are reason and compromise.
