Baltimore Ravens (Mr Flopnuts) - D+
I've already had words with Flopnuts in this thread about my bad feelings about his Draft. It starts mostly with drafting Flacco in the second round, when the heart and soul of the Ravens' defense (Ray Lewis) may be in his last season in purple. You need a lot of presense to fill in eventually, and I felt Lofton was picture perfect as Lewis' heir. Nonetheless, the Ravens opted for Flacco, a 6'6" statuesque project with inflated numbers.
I was equally disappointed in his first round, as I am nowhere near as high on Leodis McKelvin as the rest of the planet is. I believe McKelvin has the gifts to become truly special in this league, the transition from Troy to the NFL is too perilous to warrant the Top 10. McKelvin is too unproven for me and now he gets to have Lewis and Reed jump down his throat every time they get to the sidelines.
Kansas City Chiefs (Mecca) - B+
Considering all the hype that's surrounded this Draft for the Chiefs, Mecca took a fairly unconventional route and in my opinion, it'll pay dividends for the Chiefs. This is, first and foremost, a Herm Edwards team, and you need to have a defense that can carry the offense, whether it needs to or not. The Ellis pick is genius for the obvious reasons, but it's the Groves pick that'll scratch Chiefs fans the wrong way.
I like it, as Herm's philosophy dictates that he'd rather wear out one good player than rotate that player with a mediocre player. Throwing Groves in means that Herm doesn't have to play Allen and Hali 50 snaps a game. There's a reason Allen doesn't get sacks in the second half... CB Justin King has a lot of upside if good coaching can siphon off his boneheaded inconsistency. I don't believe he was a reach, but I don't believe he was the right pick, either.
New York Jets (PHOG) - B+
The Jets only have two picks in this Draft, and PHOG made the safe, smart picks. Darren McFadden is the perfect ying to Thomas Jones' underwhelming yang, and will take a lot of pressure off whoever it is that's unfortunate enough to line up under center. He'll also have the newly acquired Tony Richardson and Alan Faneca to block for him, so props to PHOG for realizing that this is a team in need of a home run hitter at RB.
Devin Thomas was a good pick at the top of the second. There are other choices that I thought they could have benefitted from, but this pick does more to zazz up their lackluster offsense. Thomas isn't the kind of rookie that will make an immediately, Bowe-like splash, but he could come around in a year or maybe late this season.
