Green Bay Packers (crazycoffey) - D
Well, after the Pack have largely rebuilt themselves with stellar drafting over the past few years, they slam into a massive speedbump here. I wasn't crazy about any of the Pack's four selections over the course of this Draft, and I don't even know if more than one of them will see any time in this league. Reggie Smith is the only exception, as the Pack need help in their secondary and Smith can man several positions. Henne at the bottom of the second wasn't that horrendous a pick, as depth was needed. But this soon? And Henne? Hmmm...
Highsmith was a mind-boggling pick, taken at least a couple rounds higher than he should have, especially when there are better OLBs with far more promise available -- this group of teams have undervalued OLB and there were better guys available. And Cousins was simply not worth the 3rd rounder. He barely plays OT and is going to need a complete makeover to play in the NFL, and who the hell knows how that'll turn out. The Pack set themselves back with this Draft, but it's possible that good comes out of it.
Oakland Raiders (ChiefsCountry) - A-
In the Top 10 picks, probably the only thing that rivaled my surprise that Jake Long dropped to the Patriots was Chris Long falling to the Raiders. I sincerely doubt three teams pass on this sure thing, and I'm convinced Long will actually go #1 overall. Nonetheless, ChiefsCountry made the obvious pick at #4 to stop the bleeding, and the Raiders get unbelievable value there. Literally unbelievable, as in I'm incapable of believing it.
DT Kentwan Balmer was an equally genius pick in the 2nd round. Balmer is a 1st round quality 3-tech, and as good as he is now, he's got a very high ceiling. They need offensive tackle help but they Balmer is not only BPA, he's also filling in a huge need for the Raiders. Fortunately, they've traded this pick away so this can't happen. They've traded their 3rd away too -- Oakland should just replace Al Davis with ChiefsCountry.
Jacksonville Jaguars (pestilenceaf23) - B+
The Jags made safe and smart picks at their first three spots, but none of them blew me away in value. It was a responsible Draft for a team that believes they are but a few pieces away from knocking off the Colts and Patriots for the AFC crown. Jackson was as solid a selection late in the first as any they could have made, and it filled a position of need.
S DeJuan Morgan could be considered a slight reach for the Jags in the second, but their secondary was one cornerstone away from being complete, and Morgan might be the final brick in the wall (mixed metaphor, but whatever). Red Bryant in the 3rd is probably as good a pick as they made in this Draft, replacing Stroud with a Bryant who's perfect to play 2-tech in the Jags' 4-3. Bryant should start right away and teams will not have much success running to him.
The pick that may cast a shadow over all of these is their selection of QB Josh Johnson late in the third. Now I believe there's a lot to Johnson that mainstream fans of the Draft haven't seen. I think he's a veritable boom-or-bust where his ceiling is silly ridiculous and his downside is real and damning. But I love the gamble pestilenceaf23 took on Johnson, I would have done the same thing -- and I would have done it about 10 slots sooner.
