Well here I am. Time to kill. So once again I dispense my useless advice on the peons below.
I think the Vikings have had a fair draft. They needed a TE, and got a good one. They needed a DE, and got a good one. They needed a QB, and I believe they got a good one but he's going to need good coaching.
I think they could still use pass rushing help, even with the first round selection of Merling. People forget that the Vikings' best pass rusher only garnered 5 sacks last year. A could guys stand out to me, as their names have been briefly mentioned by both myself and OTW. DE Kendall Langford has drawn a lot of attention because of his monstrous size -- 6'6", 295 lbs. That's a huge guy.
Normally, especially if I were a 3-4 team that needed gigantic DEs, I'd be all over that. But the Vikes don't play a 3-4 -- they play a Cover 2 4-3, which needs the complete opposite type of DE, a smaller undersized guy with great speed and pursuit.
Believe it or not, a guy like that does exist at this point, in the form of Eastern Michigan's Jason Jones. This gentleman's still a bit large for the Cover 2 at 6'5", 270+ lbs, but he's as fast as all but the most elite DEs in this Draft. Obviously he's got a lot of technique work to go through as he pretty much just crushed his small college opponents with his size, but the Vikes have a good eye for defensive line talent, and pass rushing is of such monumental concern to this team that this is a very smart pick.
