Brought up that Temple of Doom had it's dark tone and subject matter because Lucas had so much luck with it [as the 2nd in a trilogy] in the SW series [ie, ToD was supposed to be the 'Empire Strikes Back' of the series], while Speilberg wanted to continue in the B-Movie/serial vein.

As I noted earlier, the plan wasn't to do a "darker" Indy film. It happened because Lucas was going through a terrible divorce, hence the "ripping out of hearts" by the main baddie.
