I'm beginning to believe that they're going to tie the Atlantian civilization into this as well.
Maybe the Atlantians were the first to discover this Axis Mundi and to unravel its power. They've all moved on but left behind their secrets, which Hanso Alvar and his team had begun to discover.
It also explains why no one in our world has been able to discover Atlantis: It's been moving throughout time.
Whatever may be the case, they've assuredly set it up so that it's either extra-terrestrials or an ancient civilization that initially unlocked the power of the "island.".
