Bad news for Otis and Derrick

Stupid. 2 of the best players how sad

Bad news for Otis and Derrick
The chances for Otis Taylor and Derrick Thomas to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2009 took big hits today.

For Taylor, the news couldn't have been worse. Wide receiver Bob Hayes and defensive end Claude Humphrey were selected by the Seniors Committee as finalists for election into the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2009.

That means Taylor will have to wait another year.

While the Seniors Committee nominees are a separate vote than modern-day players with eligibility such as Thomas, the presence of Humphrey can't help Derrick's cause.

Humphrey, one heck of a player for some terrible Atlanta teams in the late 1960s and 1970s, was a modern-era finalist in 2003, 2004 and 2006. So it will be hard to deny him induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a Seniors nominee.

Although the sack did not become an official statistic until 1982, Humphrey is unofficially credited as having 122 career sacks during his career with the Falcons (1968-1978) and Philadelphia Eagles (1979-1981).

And in 1980, he led the Eagles with a club-high 14.5 sacks as Dick Vermeil's Eagles played in Super Bowl XV. The absence of a Super Bowl appearance has hurt Thomas' cause.

The bottom line for Thomas is in 2009, Bruce Smith, the NFL's all-time sack leader, will be a slam-dunk for election. And Richard Dent, a former Super Bowl MVP, likely will be a finalist again. Add Humphrey, and how many pass-rushers will there be room for on a ballot that also will include Cris Carter and first-time candidates Shannon Sharpe and Rod Woodson?

Hayes was the Seniors Committee’s candidate in 2004 and is one of the few senior nominees not to get elected. The fact that he has been nominated again is a strong indication that he'll get in this season.

That leaves just five spots for modern-day players, assuming Humphrey is elected, too.
