You are free to upgrade players from the practice squad (PS highlighted in red) if you want to and can assign contracts to the players drafted this year from the autodraft (because the owner didn't show up for the draft). The only requirement, if you promote a player from PS is that you need to assign as many players from this years draft class (highlighted in green) to the PS. The players that already have contracts cannot be changed.
