They can tell within a very precise where a bleet or grunt or crunching leaf comes from from further away than you'd think. Hell, light sounds are half of their communication.
As for the cars....their eyes are built to see at night and they don't see really in color. Lights from a car blind them...thats why they react silly at night or stand still.

So that doesn't explain during like afternoon they will stand on 435 going north then all the sudden run out. Plain daylight. Oh well.
