I've read the first book. The abstinence message, imo, is from people taking the fact that Meyer is Mormon and drawing conclusions from that. It's overhyped and an attack that's really just based on assumptions about Meyer's faith, not from the reality of the text itself. I read the first book and later found out that the author was Mormon. I actually thought it was bizarre and intriguing that she was, because the book seemed so un-Mormon and erotically charged.
