I realize that there are 4 books. I also realize that they probably won't be taught in American Literature classes anytime soon. But what I don't see is the supposed abstinence message or rightwing/mormon morality message that was attributed to it. If you think the story is banal or in some other way less impressive than, for example, Interview with the Vampire, I don't have a problem with that critique. I thought the movie was OK for what it was, a teenage version of a vampire story, but it's not great and afaic it shouldn't be mistaken for a wholesome example of conservative family values.
