I don't have a problem with it. Football players get nicknames. IMO, Thiggy is a lot better than some of the nicknames other players have gotten.
And, if it were a one time meeting, I probably wouldn't say "Thiggy", it would probably be more of "um, uh, Mr Thigpen sir, would you mind signing this for me?", but if we had ongoing interaction, I probably would throw it out a time or two to see how he takes it.
