They are not near a deal. They are not near a deal right now, they were not near a deal yesterday, they will not be near a deal tomorrow. Mike Shanahan will not be the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs," Schefter told 9NEWS. "All the people in Denver can stop worrying or stop talking about it, it's not happening. I know there have been national reports to the other effect. I'm here to tell you just the opposite, it's not going to happen."
Schefter says he has spoken with Shanahan directly about it.
"I speak to Mike regularly, there has been nothing in his tone or in his message that has given me any indication that he will be the coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. I know for a fact they've not had contact to this point. The Chiefs may in fact reach out to him in the coming days and even then I firmly believe it will not change anything," Schefter said.

I have to believe him. The notion that Schefter says, he has spoken with Shanahan directly about it, shoots down the rumor.
Schefter is a reporter. His credibility is at risk, along with the reputation of the NFL Network.
The NFL Network, have the right to surpress the information if they are truly interested in the risk to the brand and their name.
I would be shocked, if this story did not pan out. Then again, I have to remind myself, it is sports we're dealing with. Still, the quest for higher ratings depends on the consumers trusting the information.
