Actually, this signing is just like many Pioli made in 2001. That season, the pats signed over 20 veterans in FA, most of them for minimum contracts. Most of these guys were signed to fill specific roles on Belichick's D.
I might also note that the Pats suprised the league by winning the SB. The year before, the Pats had a losing record (5-11).
