I don't like freezing panes because then you can't easily adjust them. A better way is to manually split the screen, because you can just click and drag to do it. You click on these little thingies and then just drag them to wherever you want the split. (Note that you can't freeze panes and manually split the screen simultaneously. If you freeze panes, the little drag bars will disappear, so unfreeze any panes before attempting this at home.)
I like this method because I can then scroll in both windows and change the size in both windows very easily. If you freeze panes, you can only scroll in one of the two windows.
