I don't blame him. He's only playing 2 or 3 more years and unless he really is a spoiled prima donna only in it for the money (which I don't believe...), he's going to want a chance at a title before he retires. Which he won't get here, not in that time frame.

I'd say wish him the best of luck and get as much for him as you can.
