And we're not talking an old QB or dominant pass rusher; we're talking about a TE. Aside from KC fans, saying 1st rounder for a 30 something guy who plays an ancillary position will cause people to look twice.

I agree. But Gonzalez would have immediately contributed and could have well put either one of them over the hump. And he is, at the moment, at least, at the top of his game and healthy. It is reasonable to assume he's got at least one good year left in him, so they would have had that plus the end of last season.
If it works, the GM is a hero. But even if it doesn't, I think it would have been an acceptable risk.
Now, with another year gone? Perhaps not.
