Well, I'm not taking a side, but it also has to do with how this hitter is handling the bat recently, what the situation in the game is, with the pitcher, the batter's history against the pitcher.
I'm not saying he was right or wrong, but it's deeper than just "never do it unless you have a terrible hitter up there"
