I don't mind a guy that's funny in the booth, but it's got to be organic. It doesn't work when you take a guy, put him in the booth and say, "Now, let's have some of that same zany banter you and Wilbon have" and then make contrived situations to try and make it work. The reason he and Wilbon have a good chemistry on PTI is that they've worked together at the Washington Post for so long they have a natural give and take. It's not contrived. On MNF it always felt contrived.
The other reason I didn't think Kornheiser worked in the booth was because he's not a guy that's going to break things down, he's a guy that looks at things in a broader sense, more general terms. Not Xs and Os. He even used to goof about it on his old radio show. They'd say, tongue in cheek, "More hardcore sports talk coming up!"
When he was trying to work his way in during the game, between plays, it didn't work for me.
I think he could be good at halftime doing something, but not in the booth. I think a guy like Boomer Esiason is funny in the booth, he makes jokes, but he also knows football. That's the kind of guy they need, I think.
