Not as surprising now as it was a month ago. The defense is showing signs that they're getting better, I think. I mean, shit, they've only given up 47 points through three games. They gave up as many in the first two preseason games last year, and then another 24 in the third. And they just look better doing it. They're clearly stronger against the run and they're getting pressure on the QB without going blitz-crazy to do it.
They've got to get off the field on 3rd down was the biggest thing I saw from the starters tonight, but like I said, I think that's going to be a problem if their #1 corner, their top coverage safety and their starting coverage linebacker are all on the sideline.
What I want to see is what they look like when they're really scheming for a team, pulling out all the stops. I think there's more talent on that defense right now than they've had in years and they appear to be better coached than in recent memory, although they still show some of the same "play well for a while and then fall apart" tendencies. Except they seem to be able to recover, and they've kept teams out of the endzone when the offense has put them in bad situations. There are some positive signs...
