It's not really all that close. Ohio State gets good recruiting classes. USC should never lose a game with the classes that they get. Carroll's biggest strength is also his biggest weakness--he's a nice, laid back guy. Unfortunately, he never learned the lesson that even Dick Vermeil did, you can still be a great guy, a loyal coach, and work the hell out of your players in practice.
That team just flat out should not lose. Part of it is a philosophical problem, as relying on defenses to win the game for you when offenses will use 4 downs is a recipe for disaster, but his teams just never have the nastiness that they should.
