I've never had any negative experiences with Southwest, unless Chicago Midway counts as a negative experience.
They have multiple boarding groups, assigned by letter (A, B, C, etc). These are first come-first serve, kind of. If you print out your boarding pass a day before the flight you'll get in on A group. Wait until you get to the airport and you'll be boarding later.
