I also hate needles. However, having passed 40 and realizing it's pretty essential to get yearly blood tests, I have devised a simple solution: I
do not look at them. I've never even seen what the blood-drawing needle looks like. I sit down, let them tie off the arm, and then I look away and close my eyes and say, "I'm fine with it if I don't see it." I clench the fist, I grit my teeth against the stab of the needle going in, and I don't open my eyes until I feel the tourniquet come off and the cotton ball get Band-Aided onto the hole.
