I think the full marathon fills up much quicker though as there are a lot less spots for that. There are also some psychos who do a double: 1/2 on Sat and Full on Sunday.

Ah, okay. I'm definitely going to target the ascent for next year as long as I can keep running and getting into shape.
The guy I talked to today is really, really into running, and in fact just finished a 50-mile mountain race. Looking him up, it appears that he's in the 1:30 to 1:40 range on half-marathons and 3:15 or so in marathons. He did the Ascent in 3:15 and was in the top ten percent of male finishers.
I know a woman who did the ascent this year, too. She ran a flat half-marathon in 1:53 this summer in a race that we both ran, and her time in the Ascent was 4:49. She said it was not enjoyable.
I suspect that the ascent is as much about leg strength as it is endurance.
