I can't speak for anybody else, but I don't enjoy weights, and I don't enjoy gyms. I just don't want to do that kind of shit. The reality is that I'd rather run or swim (outdoors) than do anything else. And I'm not even going to try to back this up scientifically but I think that's really what's most important: finding something you enjoy that gets you off your ass. Not everybody is going to turn into a gym bunny. And that's fine - just do
something. Find your niche.
I know earlier in the year, before my back problems started, I went from 240 to 220 without touching a single weight, at around 5 pounds a month, so it can be done, whether it's the optimal way to do it or not, and I'm looking forward to getting myself going again. I've really felt like something's been missing the last six weeks, since I haven't been able to run.
(And damn has the weight come back fast - I've got a lot of work to do)
