Great Northerns are my favorite, pintos are great too. I'm ok with or without the ham. If I don't use a hock, I'll usually use some chicken broth. If I make a ham, I like to turn the bone into a stock. That makes an extra special pot of beans.
Either way, if I have a bowl of white beans and a bottle of hot sauce I'm a happy guy.
