I think any reaching out to new talent is a good thing and shows somebody in the studios is paying attention, but really that's a producer who got a deal. He may bring on the same talent who worked for him for free, but he may not, and he may not be allowed to if the studio has their own ideas.
I wish him luck dealing with the other 7 producers they will saddle him with, and all of their constant notes. The short is an example of what can be done technically if you cut out the bullshit, but dealing with a feature length story is another ballgame.
This may be the first youtube clip to get somebody a deal, but it certainly isn't unusual to make a short to get noticed. Sometimes it's a good thing, sometimes not. 9 has an interesting visual, but a really blah story, and full of plot holes, might have made a masterpiece as a short.
Again, all good to look out for new talent, but the creatives on this one didn't get the deal, and while the vfx are pretty good, that was not made on a home computer. I do give the producer points for having a good sense of Hollywood math already. 300 dollars, my ass.
