Once there was an original Star Trek episode when Kirk and crew came upon a civilization that only spoke in metaphors. I thought how strange it was at the time that it took the whole episode to figure out how to communicate.
If you think about it, it would be somewhat unnatural for English speaking people to actually talk without using metaphors.
