The last New Madrid quakes made church bells ring as far away as Boston. There are no mountains to contain the effects, so they just go on and on. These quakes tend to happen approximately every 300 years, and it's been 200 years since the last one. An 8.0 magnitude quake in that area would lay waste to much of the midwest and economically cripple the country in a way we'd probably not recover from.

And it will happen again. Hopefully not in our lifetimes.
