Yep. Dick Labeau is a perfect example. Great D-coordinator, got a job as head coach and sucked balls and then went back to D-coordinator and won a couple of Super Bowls.

On a side note I was doing a quick read about Belichick's stint in Cleveland. The funny part was he was the offensive coordinator for 3 years along with being a head coach.
