You aren't going to get thrown out of a casino for staring at the cards. They might laugh you out, though. A hobby is one thing. You mentioned that you were trying to beat the game. Here's a newsflash. You aren't going to beat the game.
There's a reason those MIT kids became so famous. They were the exception even among the exceptions. Vegas loves card counters. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Every dumbass dealing himself cards on the plane ride to Vegas in order to "brush up" on their skills is like an ATM for the casinos.
