There are always gray areas. Pat's Cheney thread was one of them. The typical response for those is to let them ride for a while, then move them over when they start getting out of hand. That's basically the same way that "media center" or "pictures" threads are handled. They live in the Lounge for a while, but eventually get moved over when appropriate. That practice predates me by a long time.

It is a judgement call. I might disagree with a Mod's judgement in a given case, but it's your call not mine.
But I think Frazod's poll was a question of changing the protocol to stop the relatively recent trend of posters who know better but have chosen to move their religious or politics topics out into the Lounge.
Since there really isn't any reason for a DC regular to accidentally post a political thread in the Lounge, any thread that shows up in the Lounge is deliberately there.
In some cases it might be a noob who made a mistake. In some cases, it's a major news story that is a rightful exception.
But in the last few cases, it's clearly a deliberate effort by a few to broaden the visibility of their political or religious topic. It's deliberate choices like that that IMO could be subject to extra punishment at the discretion of the Mod.
