Nobody worth a damn has signed here in years, not since the early '00s. I think that's part ownership philosophy - they'd rather develop and re-sign their own players, such as they are - but I think there really is an issue with players not being all that interested in signing here. This is not a winning franchise, and it's not a great location for anybody on the outside looking in. But I think another part is that free agency just wasn't what it is in the 90s. There aren't home runs; no team lets legitimate stars hit the market now. Every player out there on the market has some kind of notable problem, whether it's experience (or lack thereof), age, injury or something else. They wouldn't be on the market in the first place if they didn't. And I don't think people consider that part of the equation, about how much of a risk so many of these signings actually are, especially when weighed against the kind of money teams sign them for. When I think about that, I'm not sure that it really bothers me all that much that KC is more conservative with their signings. I think the real issue in the end is that they can't draft worth a shit, a problem that goes back nearly 20 years.
