The main thing he has to lose is his job if he gets in a relationship with a coworker that goes to shit. A woman in a crumbling marriage could be a ticking time bomb. In this economy, doing anything to put one's job at risk is foolish.

I'll leave the blustering about morality to the usual suspects. Based on what you've seen of their nature, take it for what it's worth.
