Unless you're looking to have one of them plow into the back of your car (which incidentally, I am not opposed to), the worse thing you can do is try to get out of their way. You're better off holding your position and letting them find a way around you.

I disagree, the hands free helps because holding a phone up to your ear restricts your head movement.
