JOPLIN, Mo. • Family members of 16-month-old Skyular Logsdon offered conflicting reports Wednesday night about the fate of the toddler missing after Joplin's tornado.
The Kansas City Star reported that the boy's great-uncle had identified Skyular at the morgue on Wednesday. The Star attributed the information to the stepmother of the child's uncle. They are both relatives of the boy's father.
But relatives of Skyular's mother told the Post-Dispatch that Skyular was not in the morgue Wednesday and that they had checked again with disaster officials after hearing about the disputed accounts.
"As far as we know, he's still missing," said the boy's stepgrandfather, Rusty Burton. "So far, there hasn't been any changes" in the boy's status.
Skyular disappeared from his mother's arms in Sunday's storm. His mother, Carol Tate, and his father, Corderro Logsdon, were both severely injured and taken to a Kansas hospital.
With the parents in the hospital, other relatives have undertaken the search for Skyular. The efforts made by Burton and three other relatives were detailed in a Post-Dispatch article on Wednesday.
The relatives quoted by the Star could not be contacted by the Post-Dispatch.
Burton said that "these false reports" about Skyular being found only compounded the family's anguish
