Yeah being promoted to lead people I had previously been friends with has happened twice. It can be tough but as long as they have respect for your position it can work.
This girl I had to let go went on to become the GM of a colliegiate league baseball team and actually hired me to do public address announcing 2 years later so it was water under the bridge and she got it. Last I heard she's selling high dollar real estate in NYC so she's done just fine for herself.
