Long ago, when I first got into consulting, I had a coworker who was a pretty attractive woman. Not frilly attractive, but elegant attractive. We were starting up a project in a distant city and the client had a social gathering to let everyone get to know each other, and one subcontract member of our consulting team (whom we had hired over the phone) was an eye-scorcher. Gorgeous figure, gorgeous face, and she was really nice as well. We're talking spectacular in terms of appearance. Absolutely spectacular. Seriously. Spectacular. Melt-your-face-off-if-you-get-too-close hot. My coworker and I had a nice conversation with her (no threesome or anything, just a conversation) and we met a bunch of other people and had a generally pleasant evening.

When we were driving back to the hotel we were chatting about who we'd met, and my coworker said, "I hated that Maria woman." [Name changed to protect the innocent.]

I said, "What?"

"I hated her."

"Why do you hate her? She seemed really nice."

"She was all arrogant and snotty. She's not going to be good to work with." She then proceeded to rip apart this other woman. Ripped. Her. Apart.

Now, I had been in the conversation with the two of them. They had not talked at all when I wasn't standing there with them. That Maria woman was very nice. There was absolutely nothing arrogant or snotty about her, and in fact it was the opposite. By all rights she should have been posing in a bikini on a Tahitian beach for seven figures a year, and yet she seemed quite happy with the fact that she was meeting us at a consulting social.

I worked with that coworker for several years, and beginning with Maria I began recognizing the pattern that any time she met a woman who was more attractive than she was, she disliked the woman, and it was never for a legitimate reason. It was amazing and it was completely consistent, and my coworker never knew that she exhibited the pattern. There were only two attractive women that she didn't beat on, and I think that was only because they were other coworkers that I was friends with, so she didn't talk to me about them.

It was quite the eye-opener.
