If you are able to see, on a ball hit to first, that the pitcher is not covering and the 1B will have to try to tag you, then sliding will make you harder to tag.
Beyond that, you should almost always slide feet first instead of head-first because the couple microseconds aren't worth an injury, but if its the playoffs, then slide head first all day.
