As for a 1911 if you want a nice entry level mil surplus. Go with High Standard & remember when you are looking at the Rock Island 1911, you are really looking at a High Standard made in the Philippines. No need to pay the extra money for the engraved name of an Armory that has been closed for decades. I have 2 HS 1911s & both are good hand guns.

The more I think about an AR15, the more it seems like a bad idea, financially speaking. To get it the way I would want it, adding optics, the right quad rail, a different stock, and other goodies, it would end up costing way more than the rifle itself. That being said, I still want one bad.
I was eyeing some Colt 1911's yesterday after I got done at the shooting range. They had a couple of beautiful Lightweight XSE Commanders. But they were asking about $1100 and $1400 for them. Seems pretty high, and I didn't even bother asking if there was any wiggle room. If I do get a 1911, a Colt would be my #1 choice at the moment. Springfield would be my #2. The only problem is that they are pretty scarce around here.
A shop close to my place has a couple of Rock Island Armory 1911's in the low to mid $400 range. I haven't held them in my hands yet, but I'm a bit skeptical of a sub-$500 1911.
