I think the main thing is to show affection after you beat them. When I got spanked as a child, my parents would immediately feel bad and try to explain how they still love me and showed me affection. Of course by that time, I would have cried all the demons out and felt guilty for driving my parents to beating me. Everyone was better off after it. Good times.
