A good rule of thumb is that when a cartoonist's son can take over upon retirement, it was never a very good cartoon.

Having said that, though, I guess we should acknowledge that adult men may not be the target market. For most or all of the cartoons above, criticizing them is like criticizing Sesame Street for having weak plots and poor character evolution. Maybe kids have to guffaw at Marmaduke and Fred Bassett before they can evolve to chuckle at Calvin and Hobbes and The Far Side.
