Jenkins: B1G's lone Biletnikoff semifinalist
November, 14, 2011
By Adam Rittenberg
Illinois senior A.J. Jenkins is one of 10 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation's best wide receiver.
Although Illinois' offense has fallen apart in the past month, Jenkins deserves the recognition.
But so does Iowa's Marvin McNutt.
The Hawkeyes senior has a legitimate beef about being left off of this list. He has been brilliant all season for Iowa, recording 65 receptions for 1,089 yards and 10 touchdowns. Jenkins has 11 more receptions and 44 more receiving yards than McNutt, but McNutt and Northwestern's Jeremy Ebert both have three more touchdown receptions. McNutt on Saturday became Iowa's all-time leading receiver.
Ebert and Michigan State's B.J. Cunningham also are having great seasons, but McNutt got totally snubbed. He ranks 11th nationally in receiving yards (108.9 ypg), and his yards-per-catch average of 16.75 is fifth among the nation's top 25 receivers this year.
It's too bad.
Jenkins ranks eighth in receiving yards average (113.3 ypg) and 11th in receptions (7.6 per game). He has been Illinois' only weapon for much of the season.
Three finalists will be selected next week and the winner will be announced Dec. 8 during the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show.
