We had about as good a chance of completing that dumpoff to the back for enough yardage to kick a FG (and make it) as we would have of completing the ensuing hail mary pass if the pass to the back had gone incomplete.
I want my quarterback to take the opportunity to win a game whenever its presented, not wait for another chance.
