Figure it this way.
Edwards was up by 3 to start the race.
The only bonuses are: Lead a lap (1 point), lead the most laps (1 point), win (3 points).
If Tony wins, He'll get 43 points for the win + 1 point for leading a lap + 3 points for winning. That's 47 points.
If Edwards finishes in 2nd he'll get 42 points for second + 1 point for leading the most laps. That's 43. [also one for leading a lap=44]
That's a 4 point difference and Edwards was only up 3.
Stewart would win the Championship by 1 point.
