Shortly after being announced as the head coach of Kansas, Charlie Weis offered a receiver he’s very familiar with from one of his previous coaching stops.

On Friday night, Weis called South Bend (Ind.) Washington senior Gehrig Dieter and extended him a scholarship.

It’s the first BCS offer for the 6-foot-3, 210-pound Dieter, who met Weis during past summer camps he attended when Weis was the head coach at Notre Dame.

Dieter is very high on Weis and excited to learn more about what the Jayhawks program could offer him.

“He always has at least two receivers that are big playmakers in the offense,” Dieter said. “He really knows what to do with his playmakers, and he knows how to run a successful offense, and he’s a great all-around coach.”

Weis was recruiting Dieter while he was the offensive coordinator at Florida, and the two briefly caught up about the offer.

“He said he wants me to come and take an official and he said they’re going to run the same offense they did when he was at Notre Dame,” Dieter recapped.

The Jayhawks join SMU, Northern Illinois, Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Toledo and Western Michigan in offering Dieter.

Last weekend, Dieter took his first official visit to SMU and has the Mustangs as his current leader. However the Jayhawks could make up ground rather quickly. He plans on taking an official to Lawrence next weekend.

“I’ve never actually looked into Kansas,” Dieter said. “I just want to take my visit and see what it’s like there and meet all the coaches and players and see the facilities and all that.”

Dieter put together quite a senior campaign, including a national-record 437-yard performance against Elkhart Central during the regular season. He finishes the year holding another national record in average yards per catch for a career along with four other Indiana state records. Besides yards in a game, he has 4,326 yards and 49 touchdowns for his three-year career. This season he had 2,171 yards receiving and 25 touchdowns.

Another BCS school that could be close to offering is California. Bears assistant Marcus Arroyo called Dieter and requested his transcripts.
