I don't believe the ball has to land completely in the end zone. Let's say he was in the middle of the field and somehow "fumbled" by winging the ball, clearly through the end zone, but with such force that it landed out of bounds.
I'm 99.9% sure that's still a touchback. The ball doesn't need to land "in" the end zone to be a touchback.
