Prepare for disappointment.
The new salary minimum (starting in 2013) refers to actual cash being spent, not a team's individual cap room. To meet the minimum, a team's cash spending will have to be at least 89% of the cap limit.
Last year, the cap was about $120 million. Going into the season, the Chiefs' cap figure was like $20M under that. But according to the Star, their cash spending was $119 million, well above the 89% minimum. If the minimum had been in place, they wouldn't have had to spend another dime.
They'll have to continue to spend more money as the cap continues to rise. But if their cash spending continues to fall in that same range relative to the cap limit, there's never going to be a point where they'll be forced to make a drastic increase in their cap room.
