Depends on the cost.

All costs being equal, Tolbert (though I think Hillis has more upside).

But if you can get Hillis on a safe, shorter term deal, he's a perfect make-good, play hard, candidate. He's Shaun Smith in your backfield.

If anything, I would worry that if a guy like Tolbert has to settle for a short-term deal in a year he thought he would cash in, you'd get mediocre effort from him while 'pouting' similar to how McClain started the year.

Like I said - I understand the risk and appreciate the concerns. But the alternative way to look at that is to view it as an opportunity to get a very skilled guy that fits our team well who is both motivated and underpriced.

Zigging when everyone else does gets you to .500. If you don't have an elite quarterback in this league, you need to go against the grain here and there.

This is a good opportunity to do just that.
