In 1961, I got in a real fight at recess. Both of us came back to the room with black eyes. No big deal, the teacher knew our parents would deal with us that night.
In 8th grade wood shop, our teacher, Mr. Atherton was well known for giving spats out in the hall with a wood paddle. You bent over and grabbed your ankles. You could hear it all over the school, and all the teachers knew it. No biggie.

For the record, I got in a fight in 1998. Neither I nor the guy I was up against was given any level of discipline, but both our parents were called, and my punishment at home was far worse than anything the school ever did.
And my 8th grade shop teacher was proud of his paddle as well. In 1996. I know that's pretty much been eliminated these days, but I don't buy all the "when I was your age" stuff.
